The recycling of plastic malt sacks has been an industry-wide challenge for many years, mainly due to the difficulties around the local recycling of polypropylene. We have been working hard to resolve this and are proud to have found a great solution in TerraCycle.
TerraCycle is a global leader in recycling, with over 650 partnerships with major brands and over 40,000 clients worldwide. This innovative company is the first of its kind, tackling the waste crisis we’re experiencing today through its circular economy approach. They are on a mission is for ‘Eliminating the Idea of Waste®’ through recycling and reusing materials that would usually end up in landfills and incinerators. TerraCycle develops “ways to collect and recycle rubbish that local Waste Recycling Centres do not generally accept”, like our Crisp Malt sacks. We’ve teamed up with TerraCycle to provide brewers and distillers with an innovative solution: Zero Waste Boxes™. These boxes ensure the collection and recycling of waste malt sacks, to keep them out of landfills and incinerators, and allows full transparency and traceability of the volumes of waste collected, providing a solution to recycling waste sacks, this programme will support you if you are aiming for ‘Zero Waste’ within your brewery or distillery.
Zero Waste Boxes are just the beginning of our partnership with TerraCycle – we are working with them on another recycling option for our larger customers, to offer bulk collections and recycling, so keep an eye out for more to come.
TerraCycle’s Zero Waste Box is a complete and convenient solution to store, ship, and recycle various types of waste that are not currently recycled through local councils or traditional recycling facilities.
This initiative allows you to order Zero Waste Boxes directly to your site to recycle your empty plastic malt sacks (polypropylene and polyethylene). Once you have your box, you can collect your empty malt sacks at your own pace, filling the box as you go, and sending it off for recycling once it’s full. The whole process is streamlined and easy to do, while only taking up a small space in your brewery or distillery. The Zero Waste Boxes provide a great solution to those who have sustainability at the forefront of their agendas, allowing you to recycle empty malt sacks easily and quickly.

Step 1: Order a box via your sales representative or through our customer service team. Don’t forget that we’re offering the first 100 Zero Waste Boxes at half price! Please note that boxes are only available to order within the UK at the moment.
Step 2: Receive your Zero Waste Box from TerraCycle and start filling it with your empty malt sacks.
Step 3: Once your box is full, arrange a prepaid collection, by either calling UPS on 03457 977 877 or visiting ups.com/gb, clicking on ‘Shipping’, and selecting ‘Schedule a Collection’.

TerraCycle requires businesses that send their waste from commercial premises to sign an annual waste transfer note.
A waste transfer note is official documentation to track commercial waste, sent throughout the year, where it is coming from and where it is going to. It’s part of the Duty of Care legislation, which ensures waste is handled in a way is handled in a way that does not harm the environment of human health.
You just need to fill in the details of the site where you aggregate your waste, your contact details and SIC code. Please use the following EWC code 20 01 39 and note that the address you provide should not be that of your business’s headquarters but of the collection site.
