One year ago, we launched Return-A-Bag with a simple ambition: to make recycling waste plastic malt sacks easier, more affordable, and accessible for breweries and distilleries across the UK.
Today, we’re proud to celebrate an incredible first year of the scheme and even prouder of what we’ve achieved together with our customers.
In just 12 months, Return-A-Bag has helped recycle an impressive 8,984 kg of waste plastic, equivalent to more than 96,600 standard 25kg malt sacks.
What was once a difficult waste stream to manage is now being collected, recycled and given a new purpose, helping to keep valuable materials in circulation and out of landfill. This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the enthusiasm and commitment of the breweries and distilleries that have embraced the scheme.
Every pallet returned represents another step towards a more circular supply chain.
For many years, recycling polypropylene malt sacks has been a challenge across the brewing and distilling industry. Traditional recycling options have often been expensive, limited or simply unavailable.
Return-A-Bag was created to change that.
The scheme provides a straightforward, bulk collection service for empty plastic malt sacks from all malt suppliers, with no recycling or handling fees. Participants simply collect their empty sacks on a pallet, arrange transport to the recycling facility, and we’ll ensure the material is responsibly recycled through our certified recycling partner.
Once processed, the recycled plastic is transformed into secondary raw materials that go on to become new products, helping reduce demand for virgin plastics and supporting a more sustainable manufacturing industry.
As we celebrate this first anniversary, we’re excited about what’s next.
We’ll continue working alongside our customers to grow the scheme, increase recycling volumes and make it even easier for breweries and distilleries to reduce their environmental impact.
