Last month Sarah Marshall, our Technical Sales Manager for Scotland and East Coast England, spent the day with female brewers and women from other parts of Northern Monk and other local breweries to brew a special one off collab to celebrate International Womens Day, last week.
The smoked Hefe will be available in pubs and bars in and around Leeds and in can from the Northen Monk website. ‘Accelerate Action’ contains Crisp’s German Pilsner malt which is malted in our Hamburg maltings and will bring a crisp, clean, fast finishing, traditional European lager character to the beer; Crisp Wheat Malt, adding body, mouthfeel, haze and some gentle banana notes and a cherry wood smoked malt (different supplier) to add a novel aroma.
The ladies enjoyed a full brew day on the original Northern Monk brew kit at The Old Flax Store with brewer Fi, talks on sustainability of malt from Sarah from Crisp, and a tutored tasting from Northern Monk’s QA Manager Elouise.
Sarah said:
Days like these are great for bringing together women from all parts of the brewing industry, from the brewery itself to office based jobs, to the ladies who keep the pubs running. It gives those who have less experience of the practical side of brewing a deeper understanding about what goes on behind the scenes and brewers the chance to network and socialise with other females in the industry. Women in brewing are unfortunately still in the minority and should be highly celebrated, we have some fantastic female brewers out there – we need to shout about it to encourage more women into the industry.
Northern Monk shared;
March 2025 and women’s rights globally are seeing a complex mix of developments and setbacks. Our annual International Women’s Day brew felt more meaningful to our team than ever as we navigate a changing global cultural landscape. This beer is a tribute to the game-changers, trail blazers and everyday heroes that continue to push for progress and accelerate action. After voting on beer styles for this year’s IWD release, the lightly smoked Hefeweizen was crowned the winner. A unique, conversation-starter of a beer that’s been brewed to be shared! Thank you to the women that joined us at the Old Flax Store to brew this beer, and to Crisp Malt for sponsoring. The feedback that you all gave, and the spirit and energy with which you approached the brew day was incredible, we’re so grateful for everybody’s contributions to the final product.
