Base Malts

Crisp base malts are the workhorses of the mash; the ultimate source of fermentable sugars, enzymes and nitrogenous compounds required for producing excellent beer. They need to deliver consistent brewing performance every time you brew.

Crisp offers a range of base malts and brewing malts for US brewers, providing a broad palette of flavors on which to build your beers. From the heritage character of Chevallier Heritage Malt and the light color of Extra Pale Maris Otter® Malt, through to Lager Malt, Scottish Pale Ale Malt and the richer malt character of Vienna Malt, there’s a base malt to suit a wide variety of beer styles and brewing methods.

Use them individually as the foundation of your recipe or combine different base malts to create the flavor, color, body and brewing performance you’re looking for.

Base Malts for Brewing

Our brewers malt range includes heritage malts, pale malts and lager malts suited to both traditional and modern beer styles. Whether you’re looking for lighter color and a clean base, bready malts with greater depth and character, or a malt suited to lager brewing, each provides its own characteristics in the brewhouse.

The US base malt range includes Chevallier Heritage Malt, Extra Pale Maris Otter® Malt, Lager Malt, Scottish Pale Ale Malt and Vienna Malt. They can be used as the main foundation of the grist or combined to build greater complexity within a recipe.

Some base malts, including Vienna Malt, are made using conventional kilning techniques, as described on our Making Malt page. By varying steeping, germination and kilning times and temperatures, our maltsters can influence the flavors, aromas and colors developed within the finished malt.
