Since 1870 we’ve lived and breathed malting. With this passion and expertise, and by combining traditional and modern techniques, we create an impressive range of malted and non-malted products, including several unique and exclusive barley malts.
There is nothing more we love than talking to brewers and distillers so if you have any questions, or would like to arrange a call with a member of our team, please feel free to get in touch – we would love to hear from you!
At Crisp Malt, there’s nothing we love more than collaborating with our customers, especially when we can experiment with our malts. That’s why we were excited to team up with our friends at Crich Brew Co for a very special collaboration brew to celebrate a major milestone in their journey.
Crich Brew Co is an independent brewery originally born in the picturesque Derbyshire village of Crich (pronounced “Cry-ch”, by the way). What started as a small project in a garage has grown into a full-time brewing operation now based in Belper. Founded by Lloyd and driven by a genuine love for bold flavours and experimental brews, Crich Brew Co has quickly made a name for itself in the local craft beer scene.
They’ve just hit their one-year anniversary of brewing full-time and what better way to celebrate than with a collaboration beer that showcases their brewing skills and our awesome malts?
Our Sales Manager, Rob, headed over to Derbyshire to spend a day in the brewhouse with Lloyd, helping to create a new West Coast IPA called Promised Land; a name inspired by one of Lloyd’s favourite albums.
The recipe itself is based on a 7% IPA the team at Crich used to brew called Ruin, named after the historic Wingfield Manor, nearby. But Promised Land has been re-imagined to be a little more sessionable, while still packing in big hop character and showcasing some of our favourite malts.
The grist was a dream combo:
Chevallier Heritage Malt Our much-loved heritage malt brings a beautifully nutty and sweet character, with a full-bodied mouthfeel and a hint of marmalade. Lloyd described it best:
“Chevallier is an awesome malt – nutty and sweet with a marmalade undertone. It’s created a very full-bodied beer which is full of flavour.”
Torrefied Wheat Adding excellent head retention and body, Torrefied Wheat also enhances the mouthfeel and helps keep that classic West Coast clarity.
Cara Gold Malt Contributing colour, smooth sweetness, and a lovely golden hue, Cara Gold rounds out the malt profile with a delicate caramel touch that complements the hops beautifully.
This trio creates a malt backbone that stands up brilliantly to the hop intensity you expect from a West Coast IPA.
Rob got well and truly stuck in, paddling mash, weighing hops, cleaning out the kettle (with mixed success), and even digging out the tun.
“Collab day with Lloyd at Crich and boy did he put me to the sword! I had a great day, proper getting involved – weighing chemicals and hops, paddling mash, sanitising ferms, cleaning out the kettle (badly), pitching yeast and digging out the tun (which was sweaty and back-breaking work as it was very manual – I can’t help but wonder how you brewers do it sometimes!). The brew day was a great success, albeit took longer than Lloyd expected. A couple of issues with leaking pipes, so Lloyd had to go to work with the couplers and pipe cutters. The joys of running one’s own brewery!”
Despite a few brewing-day hiccups (leaky pipes are all part of the fun, right?), the result is a punchy, hop-forward, malt-balanced IPA that we’re all incredibly proud of.
Cheers to Crich Brew Co on their one-year milestone, and here’s to many more collabs, beers, and brew days to come
