Since 1870 we’ve lived and breathed malting. With this passion and expertise, and by combining traditional and modern techniques, we create an impressive range of malted and non-malted products, including several unique and exclusive barley malts.
There is nothing more we love than talking to brewers and distillers so if you have any questions, or would like to arrange a call with a member of our team, please feel free to get in touch – we would love to hear from you!
What an incredible day at Elveden Estate, for our annual Open Day, with a twist. As you probably know, we host an annual Open Day at our Great Ryburgh site, in Norfolk, opening our doors to brewers, distillers, industry writers, and distributors. This year, we had something excited we wanted to share with everyone, so our annual Open Day had a slightly different format.
On Wednesday 18th June, we teamed up with Syngenta and Elveden Estate to share the incredible sustainability initiatives we’ve been supporting over the past year. Starting our day at the Guinness Arms pub, in Icklingham, we enjoyed presentations from Ellie Wood, Rebecca Gee, Mike Benson, and Elveden Estate.
Rebecca updated us on this season’s crop, how the hot and dry weather has affected it, and what to expect from harvest and post-harvest.
Rebecca shared, “Spring 2025 was marked by record-low rainfall in April and May, which initially helped with early sowing into good seedbeds. However, the prolonged dry spell began to stress crops, especially spring-sown barley, which has struggled with reduced height and tillering. Winter barley fared better during this period, due to the stronger root system. Winter barley began coming to ear early, with predictions of an early harvest. Recent rainfall in May and June has bought some relief, improving moisture availability and potentially stabilising crop conditions.”
Ellie followed with a deep dive into our sustainability initiatives, from our Grower Groups to our partnership with Map of Ag. Ellie also shared some exciting news on our new regenerative agriculture framework, that will be launching soon – so keep an eye out for that! There’s also some exciting news about a new recycling scheme, which will be more affordable option.
Mike took us through a beer tasting, highlighting the power of malt in beer, and how each malt brings its own personality and flavour to a beer. We compared Haná Malt to Chevallier Malt, which our delegates really enjoyed.
After presentations and a delicious lunch at the Guinness Arms, we explored Syngenta’s barley plot trials, where the Syngenta team showcased their impressive regenerative ag initiatives -from cover cropping to sustainable soil health.
The sun was shining, the conversations were flowing, and the shared commitment to a more sustainable future was clear. Huge thanks to the Syngenta team for their passion and partnership. And a huge thank you to everyone who joined us!
