Since 1870 we’ve lived and breathed malting. With this passion and expertise, and by combining traditional and modern techniques, we create an impressive range of malted and non-malted products, including several unique and exclusive barley malts.
There is nothing more we love than talking to brewers and distillers so if you have any questions, or would like to arrange a call with a member of our team, please feel free to get in touch – we would love to hear from you!
Crisp base malts are the workhorses of the mash; the ultimate source of your fermentable sugars, enzymes and nitrogenous compounds required for producing excellent beer. They need to deliver these each and every time you brew. Crisp offers a wide range of base malts, providing a broad palate of flavours to build your beers on. From the rich, bready malt flavours of Finest Maris Otter®, and Best Ale through to our lighter pale malts, authentic German Pils and the honey-sweet character of Clear Choice® Pale Malt; we’ve got a range to suit every beer style and brewing method. Try them individually or mix them up to create something unique to you.
Our base malt range includes classic British brewing malts alongside specialist options, such as pale malts for ales, lagers and modern beer styles. Use them individually as the foundation of your recipe, or combine different base malts to create the flavour, colour and brewing performance you’re looking for.
Some base malts, including Vienna and Dextrin, are made using the conventional kilning technique as described on our Making Malt page. By varying steeping, germination, and kilning times and temperatures, we can influence the flavours and colour developed in the malt.
Getting the best from your base malt goes beyond choosing the right variety. From preparing and calculating your grist to mashing, wort production and malt storage, our technical team has created a range of practical brewing guides to support you throughout the brewing process.
